October is a great time to visit Thailand if you’re looking for enticing travel deals and cheaper hotel prices. Although the weather in October can be less settled, particularly in the first half of the month, the advantages still outweigh the disadvantages. With Thailand still in the off-season, tourist attractions are less crowded and it’s an excellent time to travel around the country. From the lush countryside of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north to the busy streets of Bangkok, there is no shortage of places to explore and enjoy in October.
October weather
October marks the tail end of the rainy season in much of Thailand. While travellers can expect a mix of sunshine and occasional showers, the second half of the month tends to see less rainfall. Temperatures remain warm throughout the month, making it an ideal time to explore the diverse landscapes and attractions that Thailand has to offer.
Where to visit in October
Wherever you travel in Thailand in October there is a chance of seeing some rain. When planning your travels, keep in mind that some boat services may not be available until mid-October and some national parks are closed to visitors.
For an October beach getaway, mainland destinations like Pattaya, Hua Hin and Cha Am offer more stable weather compared to the islands.
The weather conditions for the Gulf Coast islands (Ko Samui, Ko Tao, Ko Pha Ngan) are usually more settled in the first half of October. The second half of October usually sees an increase in rain. However, the reverse is true for the Andaman Coast (including Krabi and Phuket) which normally experiences more hours of sunshine and lower rainfall in the second half of October.
On Thailand’s East Coast, the island of Ko Samet is a better option than the islands further east like Ko Chang and Ko Kood which do experience heavy downpoyurs in October.
At any beach destination in October, take notice of no swimming signs and riptide warnings.
Events and festivals in October
The biggest event that usually takes place in October is the Buddhist holiday of Awk Phansa. This marks the end of the Phansa rains retreat period and is observed with various local festivals around the country. The period following Awk Phansa is also a popular time for Thai Buddhists to engage in acts of merit, such as donating new robes to monks, accompanied by parades and festivities.
In different areas of Thailand, the Vegetarian Festival is celebrated by Thai people of Chinese heritage and is prominently observed in Phuket and Bangkok. The event in Phuket is notable for the colourful parades with their mix of tradition and shock factor. The dates vary each year, but is usually in September or October.

One of Thailand’s most revered figures, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), is honoured annually on October 23. The day is known in Thai as ‘Wan Piyamaharaj‘ and is a nationwide public holiday.
